Celebrating the life of
Dennis William Ronning
October 07, 1942 - March 02, 2016
Dennis W. Ronning, C.P.A., 73, passed away March 2, 2016 after a brief illness. Dennis was born in Webster, South Dakota on October 7, 1942. He was a 1960 graduate of Watertown High School in Watertown, South Dakota. He is the son of William C. Ronning and Clara J. Ronning. Dennis attended The University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota and was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
Upon graduation in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Dennis was commissioned by the United States Army and sent to Augusta, Georgia for training. It was in Augusta, prior to being deployed to Vietnam, where he met his future wife, Patty Lawrence of Gadsden, Alabama. After his return from Vietnam, Dennis and Patty were married on August 26, 1967.
With Patty being from Alabama and Dennis being from South Dakota they compromised and moved to Springfield, Illinois where Dennis began a professional career in accounting. By 1973, Dennis and Patty had grown tired of cold winters and moved to Savannah, Georgia. For the next 40 years Dennis practiced as a partner of the firm Karp Ronning & Tindol, CPAs, P.C. During his life Dennis had the fortunate experience to find many friends and clients whose relationships he valued greatly. Many times these friends and clients sought his advice regarding their business and personal matters. Dennis had a gift to provide his clients and friends with common sense advice, support and candor without the need to seek acknowledgment or recognition.
Throughout his life, Dennis provided financial support and assistance to many people and organizations to include Savannah Christian Preparatory School, the Savannah Quarterback Club and the Bonaventure Historical Society. Many times the recipients of his financial generosity did not know the source of their support, which was his way. Since semi-retiring in 2008, Dennis occupied his time revitalizing the camellias at Bonaventure cemetery, gardening, traveling, napping and spending time with family and friends.
Dennis was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Dale Ronning. Dennis is directly survived by his wife Patty Ronning, daughter Alison Mahfet, son in law Danny Mahfet, son Will Ronning, daughter in law Beth Ronning, grandchildren Grace Mahfet, Julia Ronning, Joe Mahfet and Max Ronning all of Savannah, sisters, Doris Martin of Hazel Run, Minnesota and Darlene Dunn, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at the Greenwich Cemetery Columbarium.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that Remembrances may be sent to: Savannah Quarterback Club Scholarship Fund, The Savannah Community Foundation, Inc., 2225 Norwood Avenue, Suite B, Savannah, GA 31406, Phone 912-921-7700; Bonaventure Historical Society, 330 Bonaventure Road, Thunderbolt, GA 31410, Phone 912-228-5632; Emmaus House, 18 Abercorn Street, Savannah, GA 31401, Phone 912-495-8828.
